Kumho Ecsta V710 Tires

Tire Description

Ecsta V710 radials are Track & Competition DOT tires developed for drivers who want Kumho's highest level of performance for dry track conditions. Compared to Kumho's VictoRacer and Ecsta V700 tires, Ecsta V710 radials are designed to provide quicker turn-in response, as well as increased traction and cornering speeds. In addition to looking like pro-level racing slicks, Ecsta V710 tires perform like them as well, trading longevity for performance. Achieving the best performance requires that fresh Ecsta V710 tires be used, as their performance level will drop off after a typical race weekend's use. The Ecsta V710 tires mold a high-grip tread compound that runs with tread temperatures of between 210 and 240 degrees Fahrenheit when pushed to the limit on a dry track. This compound is molded into an asymmetric tread design utilizing a slick tread surface to maximize rubber-to-road contact and grip with just two circumferential grooves on the inner half of the tread. Beginning with a tread depth of 4/32-inch, they will not require shaving; however, they will benefit from heat cycling before competition. The tire’s internal structure features radial construction that uses two slightly angled, polyester carcass plies (with one ply wrapping around the bead and returning high up the sidewall to provide three actual sidewall plies). The belt package consists of twin, lightweight steel belts reinforced by a spirally wrapped circumferential nylon cap ply under the tread. The original size lineup of Ecsta V710 tires featured a rounded shoulder profile and overly generous section width dimensions. Ecsta V710 tire sizes introduced beginning in 2007 (as well as any new sizes introduced in the future) feature a squared shoulder profile and less generous section width dimensions. There is no overlap in sizes between the two designs. The original sizes with the rounded shoulder design are not expected to be converted to the squared shoulder design. Both designs share the same internal construction and tread compound. One of the disappointing combinations we have encountered is staggered tire/wheel size applications that include earlier rounded shoulder fronts (225/50R16) and recently introduced squared shoulder rears (245/45R16). Unfortunately the "wider" rear tires don’t actually offer a meaningful increase in section or tread width in these cases. Only tire size combinations using more stagger between the front and rear tire sizes will experience a noticeable gain in rear tire width. While rounded shoulder and squared shoulder tires can be combined in axle pairs on the same vehicle, some unique vehicle tuning may be required to maximize the performance of both designs. Ecsta V710 tires benefit from vehicle alignments that offer some negative camber and tires with the squared shoulder profiles will typically require more negative camber than tires with the rounded shoulder profiles. While Kumho Ecsta V710 radials meet DOT requirements, they are not appropriate for highway use.

Customer Reviews

Few autocross tire sizes are currently available for the stock Porsche 987 wheels, but Kumho and Tire Rack both agree that the Ecsta V710 can be fitted (225/45-17 and 245/45-17 F/R). The fronts happen to be square shouldered, and the rears are round shouldered. However, it works out to be a great combination! Ironically, my first driving experience on these competition tires took place at Michelin's Laurens Proving Grounds, in South Carolina. The V710s absolutely transformed the Cayman. Understeer and oversteer could easily be neutralized without forfeiting velocity. Besides winning Class, the 2.7L finished in the Top 20 (and 0.005 seconds behind a Porsche 911 running Hoosier A6s) in a field of 200. The Kumho Ecsta V710 is an EXCELLENT choice for autocross competition. I cannot imagine any other tire doing any more to improve performance.
